In 2019, a memorial was erected in the churchyard of St Andrew's Church, Crosby Garrett to commemorate the navvies (railway construction workers) and members of their families who died during on the construction of nearby sections of the Settle-Carlisle Railway.

The churchyard is believed to contain the unmarked graves of 12 men, 5 women and 13 children. The inscription on the memorial includes the following words (originally penned by Robert Louis Stephenson):

All by myself I have to go,
With none to tell me what to do -
All alone beside the streams
And up the mountainside of dreams.
