Appleby was the first Settle & Carlisle Railway station to benefit from a passenger footbridge. In November 1901 (after more than fifteen years of campaigning by the Town Council), a redundant structure from the Midland Railway's station at Mansfield was relocated to Appleby. Unfortunately, it was hit by the jib of a crane during a shunting incident on June 13th, 1902 (a Friday) and the resulting impact demolished the main span. Fortunately, no one was injured and a replacement was erected on Sunday 23 November 1902. This is the bridge that we see today (and it is slightly higher than the original).
