OPENING OF AN AUCTION MART AT LAZONBY.
An agricultural auction mart was opened at Lazonby on Monday under most favourable auspices. The question of establishing an auction mart at that place was mooted some two months ago, and has since been promoted by some of the leading agriculturalists of the district. Amongst the chief promoters were Mr. Ralph, of Fog Close; Mr. Norman, Mains; Mr. Bell, Scale Hill, and others. After much consideration it was determined to entrust the management of the mart to Messrs. Kidd & Co., of the Appleby auction mart with, a view to working the two auctions together harmoniously, and so as to provide a weekly sale for their customers on the Midland Railway route. The entries for the inauguration numbered from 1,200 to 1,500 sheep and lambs, and from 30 to 40 head of cattle. Mr. Joseph Thompson discharged the duties of auctioneer, and gave great satisfaction to vendors as well as to purchasers. Judging from the amount of business done yesterday, the proprietors may congratulate themselves on having achieved a success for their undertaking, which augurs well for the future prosperity of the mart, opening out, as it does, a market for a well-stocked district, which has hitherto been almost entirely isolated so far as regards railway accommodation.

LAZONBY AUCTION MART, MONDAY, SEPT. 25. - The second sale in connection with this mart took place to-day, and we have again to report a satisfactory result, the number shown being - sheep and lambs, 970, consisting of fat sheep and lambs, and keeping lambs. The cattle numbered 26 (mostly fat), 2 fat calves and 3 pigs. There was a complete clearance by three o'clock, Mr. Thompson again wielding the hammer to the satisfaction of all. There was a large attendance of dealers, and prices obtained were fully up to late quotations. Fat sheep sold from 35s to 54s; fat lambs, from 24s to 35s; store lambs, 15s to 30s; calving cows, from £15 15s to £26. Meat quotations: - Beef, 9s to 10s per stone; mutton, 8½d to 10d per lb.; lamb, 9d to 10d. There were some excellent stock in the market, proving the producing capabilities of the district. The next sale will be held on Monday, the 9th of October, for which a large entry is anticipated. Buyers will not be disappointed.
